Celia Sturgeon

December 16, 1924 ~ March 5, 2017 (age 92) 92 Years Old

Celia F. Goodman Sturgeon, 92, of Bicknell, passed away at home on Sunday, March 5. Born on December 16, 1924, she was the sixth of seven children born to Chester and Bessie (Simpson) Goodman, who preceded her in death. She attended Bicknell High School, leaving to work at the parachute factory to support the troops during World War II.
She married Clifford Sturgeon on November 26, 1944, and they were married 72 years. Early in their marriage, they settled in Michigan City, Indiana, where they raised three daughters, and owned and operated an automatic transmission specialist garage. Upon retirement, they returned to Bicknell where she spent her days reading, crocheting, painting and trying her hand at new, creative crafts that she would gift to others. An avid fan of country music, she could often be found whistling a tune while doing work around the house.
She also had a quick wit that led to her writing poetry. A poem she wrote and sent to President-Elect Jimmy Carter resulted in an invitation to his inauguration. Though she loved her creative pursuits, her greatest love was her family. She was a loving wife and mother, and a doting grandmother to six and great-grandmother to 11. She will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her brothers Ellis Goodman (Dortha) and John Goodman (Marguerite); and sisters Jean Goodman Harner (Walter); Elsie Goodman Hensley (Arthur); Belva Goodman Trowbridge (Curtis); Barbara Goodman Jarniac (Alfred); and son-in-law, Robert "Bob" Ferguson. She is survived by husband, Cliff; daughters, Joan Sturgeon Martin (Raymond), West Lafayette, IN; Regina Sturgeon Corbin (Rusty), Bicknell; and Janet Sturgeon Ferguson, Bicknell; grandchildren David Henrich, Rolling Prairie, IN; Donna Henrich Johnson (Greg), Kentucky; Denice Henrich (Drew Milizia), Vermont; Daniel Henrich (Lisa), Three Oaks, MI; Sharon Martin (David Howell), Morgantown, WV; and Michael Martin (Jill), Charlotte, NC. She is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 8, 2017, from noon to 2 PM at Fredrick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Home in Bicknell. Funeral services will follow with Pastor Seth Alexander officiating. She will be laid to rest at Edwardsport Town Cemetery. Online condolences may be made at www.fredrickandson.com.
