Shirley (Mattingly) Bunte, 90, of Bruceville, Indiana, passed away Thursday, May 28, 2026, at her home with her family at her bedside. Shirley was born on November 24, 1935, in Washington, Indiana, to Alma (Alberti) and Joseph Mattingly.

She married Joe Bunte in 1954. They were married for 64 years until he passed away on January 17, 2018.

She loved being at home and visiting with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Sitting on the front porch of her cabin in the woods, watching the animals while listening to country music, was her favorite pastime.

She was a member of the Bruceville Rod & Gun Club, where she enjoyed going every Thursday evening for sandwiches with her children.

She is survived by her three children, Randy (Kathy) Bunte of Vincennes, Indiana; Sherry Gaither of Linton, Indiana; and Jay Bunte of Freelandville, Indiana; four grandchildren, Justin (Laura) Bunte, Nick (Tyler) Bunte, Emily (Jed) Bauer, and Jesse Gaither; and six great-grandchildren, Kennedy Bunte, Kohen Bunte, Ella Bunte, Summer Bunte, Penelope Bauer, and Nolan Bauer.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Bunte; her father, Joseph Mattingly; her mother, Alma (Alberti) Mattingly; three sisters, Eleanor Sturgeon, Marjorie Mattingly, and Kathleen (Pat) Reckers; four brothers, Herald Mattingly, Charles “Gene” Mattingly, James “Rip” Mattingly, and Donald Mattingly; and her son-in-law, Jim Gaither.

Graveside services for Shirley will be held Friday, June 5, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Bicknell Memorial Cemetery, with Bill Loffer officiating.
