Phillip C. Smith, known to many as Butch, passed away on April 28, 2026, in Robinson, Illinois, at the age of 74. He was born on October 26, 1951, in Vincennes, Indiana, and lived a life marked by devotion to family, service, and the simple joys that made each day meaningful.

Butch was a man who valued hard work, loyalty, and the people he loved most. He graduated from South Knox High School and later entered the United States Air Force in 1971, beginning a chapter of service that reflected his sense of duty and commitment. Throughout his life, he carried himself with strength, dignity, and a presence that those around him came to rely on and admire.

Butch’s greatest pride was his family. He loved them wholeheartedly and treasured every moment spent in their company. He is survived by his significant other, Paula Wilson; his children, Phillip “Shane” Smith, Julie Ramirez (Jorge), Bradley Smith, and Tiffany Wagner; his 15 grandchildren, Renee John, Anthony Ayo, Alex Webb, ShayLynn Creighten, Wendy West, Nadia Ramirez, José Ramirez, Carlos Ramirez, Ally Smith, Corinne Smith, DayLynn Gibson, Laedun Stitt, Kayzli Coughlin, Lennon Coughlin, and Hendrix Coughlin; and his nine great-grandchildren. His family was the center of his world, and his love for them was evident in the many ways he showed up, supported, and cared for those closest to him.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorie “Oliver” Smith; his parents, Ralph Kenneth Smith and Flo Maxine “Jones” Schultz; his grandma, Ida “Ledeker” Jones, who raised him; and his nine siblings. These loved ones held a special place in his heart throughout his life, and their memories remained with him always.

Butch was baptized at the Thursday Church in Vincennes, a meaningful part of his spiritual journey. He also found fellowship and friendship through his membership in the Moose and the Sportsmen Club. These associations reflected the kind of man he was, one who appreciated community and companionship.

He enjoyed a wide range of hobbies and pastimes that brought him happiness over the years. He loved animals, fishing, and rock and roll music, and he especially enjoyed antiquing and collecting guns. These interests were more than hobbies to him, as they were part of the life he built and the memories he created with those around him.

Phillip “Butch” Smith will be remembered as a loving partner, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. His life was one of devotion, resilience, and affection for the people and things he held dear. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

There will be a visitation on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Fredrick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Home, Vincennes Chapel. A service will follow at 1:00 pm, officiated by Rev. Mike DeCoursey. Burial will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors. Memorial donations may be made to the Knox County Humane Society.
