Melvin Hockemeier Obituary

Melvin Duane Hockemeier, age 96, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2025, at Gentle Care in Vincennes, IN. He was born at his parents' house, the late August Fredrick and Ella Lydia “Rodenbeck” Hockemeier, on December 29, 1928, in Holbrook, NE.

After graduating from high school, Melvin joined the Navy in October 1950 and came back home, August 1954. He received the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Medal, the Korean Service Medal, and the United Nations Medal. He was a Naval Aviation Machinist, second class. After his time in the service, he received his education at college in McCook, NE. He was the owner of the Corner Discount Store in Monroe City, IN, as well as the manager of Grant Stores, the Clark store, moving over three states, where he met the love of his life, the late Theresa “Patrizi” Hockemeier.

Melvin and Theresa were married February 15, 1958, at Our Lady of Fatima in Farrell, PA. Melvin enjoyed numerous activities with his friends and family. He enjoyed fishing, shooting matches, golfing, and reading. He attended St. John’s Lutheran Church in Vincennes, IN. 

He is survived by his four daughters, Kim (Denny) Greene, Karen (Doug) Little, Kathryn (Adrian) O’Connor, Marianne (James) Kidwell,  and his son, Mark Hockemeier. He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren and his 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, his parents, and his two brothers, Norman and Wayne Hockemeier.

There will be a memorial visitation on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, from 10:00 to 11:00, with service following at 11:00 am at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 707 N. 8th St., Vincennes, IN 47591, officiated by Pastor Ron Maxwell. A burial of ashes will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church. Online condolences and fond memories may be made at www.fredrickandson.com.
