Lawrence “Pooch” Cardinal Obituary

    Lawrence E. “Pooch” Cardinal, 97, passed away at 8:00 A.M., June 29, at Good Samaritan Hospital with family at his side. 

    Pooch was a lifelong farmer of Knox County. Born May 28, 1926 to Edmund and Norah H. Meyer Cardinal. He attended Decker School and served in the Korean War. He returned home and married Patty Ann Smith on September 25, 1954. They shared their entire 58 years together in the same home until her death in October 2012. 

    Trucking, farming, mowing, and family kept his life fulfilled. He was a devoted Catholic and assisted St. Vincent church with many projects including, and still-in-use fricassee kettle paddles. Pooch was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, and VFW.

    Surviving are sons Ed and his wife, Susie of Monroe City and Deacon Ron and his wife, Amy of Vincennes; grandsons, Ryan and his wife, Jenny of Carmel, Larry of Nashville, TN, Aaron and his wife, Tara and Jordanall of Monroe City; great-grandchildren, Grace, Ella, Jackson, and Grayson; nieces that Pat and Pooch raised as daughters, Susan and her husband, Don Boyles, Nora and her husband Tom Horrall, and Janet and her husband Barry Devine. He was “Uncle Pooch” to theirchildren as well. 

    Pooch is preceded in death by his parents, two stillborn siblings, wife, and beloved daughter Sara Jo. Also, his brother Richard and his wife, BarbaraRoellgen; niece Mary Ellen; nephew Patrick “Sam”Cardinal and great nephew Richard “Rick” Horrall. 

    Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at St. John Catholic Church at 10:00 A.M. Friday, July 7, 2023. Visitation will be held at Fredrick and Son Funeral Home Thursday, July 6, 2023 from 5-8 P.M. with the Holy Rosary recited at 5:00. He will be laid to rest at St. Vincent Cemetery. 

    In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Vincent Cemetery Fund or Good Samaritan Hospice. Arrangements entrusted to Fredrick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Home. Online condolences are welcome to be left at www.fredrickandson.com.
