Herbert Sherwood Jones Jr., better known as Sherwood or Woody, was born July 8, 1943, in Lyons, Indiana and passed away at his home in Edwardsport, Indiana May 6, 2024 at the age of 80. Sherwood was a dedicated Dad, Pappaw, Great-Pappaw, and friend.
Sherwood served in the Navy during the Vietnam War and then made his career as a forklift mechanic for Hamilton Glass, where he honed the skills for his most important pastime, drag- racing.
Sherwood loved racing his Ford Mustang. He loved classic street rods, GoldWing motorcycles, camping, and trail riding with his quarter horses. He also played bass in the gospel group at his church in Hymera, Indiana. Sherwood loved dogs, especially German shepherds, and always kept a trusted companion.
He will be greatly missed by his daughters, Tammy Powers (Ron) of Vincennes, IN, and Billie Joann Neighbors of Washington, IN, and his son, Kevin Jones (Debbie) of Fayetteville, AR; his seven grandchildren, Melinda Cotton (Kris), Richelle Wieling (Kyle), Justin Swope (Kelsey), Jessee Swope (Brianna), Cheyenne Powers-Cleghorn (Weston), Ty Powers (Sarah), and James Swope (Katie); his 11 great-grandchildren; and his best friend, Roxie. Sherwood was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Sherwood Jones Sr. and Vera June “Shorter” Jones, as well as his best friends King, Jake, and Mia.
Sherwood was a loyal friend, a trusted neighbor, and a great man. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered for his strong will and his big heart.
A visitation will be held on Monday, May 13, 2024, from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm at Fredrick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Home, Bicknell Chapel with a service immediately following at 2:00 pm also at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Edwardsport Town Cemetery with military honors provided by the All Weather Firing Squad.
