Gary Douglas Leonard, a devoted family man and an avid Jesus Fan, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on April 26, 2025, at the age of 76, in Jasper, IN. Born on December 7, 1948, in Washington, IN, Gary's life was a testament to his unwavering faith and his love for his family.
Gary's journey began as the beloved son of Melvin and Carley “McLemore" Leonard. He grew up in Washington, where he would later graduate from Washington High School in 1966. Gary's deep love for his hometown was only matched by his dedication to his job at CSX Railroad, where he worked for 27 years as an operator and crew caller.
On Christmas Eve of 1974, Gary married his sweetheart, Barbara "Lamb" Leonard, marking the start of a life filled with joy, laughter, and the blessings of a large and loving family. Together, they had five wonderful children: Tracy, Greg, Alan, Amy, and Joshua. The light of Gary's life shone brighter with the addition of his 16 grandchildren - Cody, Blake, Garrett, Alexis, Abbie, Ashton, Nathan, Daniel, Haylee, Tyler, Sara, Kaitlyn, Emma, Leah, and Ryan - and his six great-grandchildren, each of whom he adored.
Gary's passion for baseball, particularly his support for the Atlanta Braves, was well-known among his family and friends. His hobby of fishing provided many cherished memories, as did the moments spent with his guitar and singing at past churches he attended. Gary was a member at the New Life United Pentecostal Church in Huntingburg, IN. Gary absolutely loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Those who knew Gary will remember him as loving, faith-filled, and funny - characteristics that made him a joy to be around. Gary's legacy is carried on through his wife, Barbara, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, his siblings Jack (Carol) Leonard, Jill (Chuck) White, Rex (Vicki) Leonard, and brother-in-law Larry Gaither. Gary now joins his late parents, his sister Nan Gaither, his brother Rex, and his grandson Zachary in eternal peace.
Gary's life will be celebrated and his memory honored as a beacon of love and laughter, a true example of a life well-lived. He left a profound impact on all who were fortunate enough to know him, and his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of his loved ones.
