Earl M. Decker, a beloved figure in the Vincennes, IN community, passed away on August 12, 2023, at the age of 81. Born on March 6, 1942, in Vincennes, he was the son of Maurice and Mildred "Turpin" Decker.
Earl served in the National Guard, following his service, he embarked on a career as a truck driver, a profession that suited his love for the open road. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to become the past owner of Big Earl's Bar.
Earl's interests were as broad and engaging as his personality. He was an avid fan of NHRA Drag Racing and was a part owner who helped build a rear-engine dragster show car. His passion for the sport led him to own a Top Alcohol Funny Car, and he traveled across the U S, competing and sharing his love for racing. He was a past member of the National Hot Rod Association, further cementing his dedication to the sport.
Earl's creativity and craftsmanship were evident in his hand-built smoker/grill cooker, which measured an impressive 25 feet long. He catered many wedding receptions, fire department events, and private parties, sharing not only his culinary skills but also his warm and welcoming personality. He was a member of 40 & 8, an organization dedicated to supporting veterans and promoting Americanism.
He is survived by his brothers, Mike (Karen) Decker of Vincennes, IN, and Gary Decker of Freelandville, IN. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great- nephews who will fondly remember their Uncle Earl. He was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Mildred Decker, and his siblings, Beverly, Paul, Alfred, and Steve Decker.
Visitation will be at Fredrick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Homes, Vincennes Chapel Friday, August 18, from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm with a service immediately following also at the funeral home. Pastor Pete White will be officiating. Burial will follow in Mt Calvary Cemetery.
