Brooks Allen Harting Obituary

Brooks Allen Harting, 84, of Freelandville, Indiana, and Taylor Park, Colorado, passed on to his Heavenly reward on Friday, June 29, 2024 at the Freelandville Community Home. He was born on February 7, 1940. Brooks was a Freelandville High School graduate, completing his senior year as a foreign exchange student in Germany. He received a B.S. in Education from University of Evansville and advanced degrees from San Jose State and the University of Hawaii. His love for adventure led him to Colorado where he was an educator/librarian/audio visual specialist in the Boulder and Colorado Springs School systems.

With the help of his parents, family and friends, a beautiful mountain cabin, “The Shack”, was constructed over seven years in Taylor Park, CO. He graciously and generously hosted and entertained hundreds of family members, colleagues, former students, friends and guests, introducing them to the beauty of the Rocky Mountains. His hospitality is evidenced by over 800 visitor signatures on his bathroom door. Brooks had a passion for adventure and exploration, guiding tours to remote locations in Colorado and other western states. He enjoyed traveling with friends throughout the U.S., Central and South America and trekking in Nepal. For 35 years he hosted upwards of 200 for the annual Taylor Park Pig Roast at his cabin. Brooks served 35 years as the Music Director for the TinCup Community Chapel in the summer months and coordinated the Friday Night Square Dances for families at the TinCup Town Hall. Brooks’s faith gave him encouragement and strength as a long standing member of the Freelandville United Methodist Church and the TinCup Community Chapel. Everyone especially enjoyed his Christmas church decorations, German singing and family brunch. Brooks lived his life Loving God and Loving his Neighbors.

Brooks was preceded in death by his parents, L.A. (Pete) Harting and Myra (Brooks) Harting and long term friend and traveling companion, Pat Miller, of Colorado Springs. Surviving are many relatives. His cousins, Janet Diekman and Mary Bedwell assisted in his care in recent years with fond devotion. Jo Ann Nomady and Nancy Kixmiller, also cousins, loved him dearly and will keep wonderful memories in their hearts.Brooks had a multitude of friends which he cherished from his home community of Freelandville, his past residence in Colorado Springs and his summer home in Taylor Park.

Celebrations of life will be held at later dates in Freelandville and Taylor Park, CO.
