Billy R. Hughey, a cherished soul known for his kindness, friendliness, and thoughtfulness, passed away in Evansville, IN, on June 10, 2024. Born on January 8, 1937, in Washington, IN, to Luther Hughey and Famie "Dorsett" Hughey, he brought light and warmth to those who loved and knew him throughout his 87 years.
He lived a full and robust life marked by his devotion to his family and his passion for woodworking, camping, gardening, and exploring flea markets. Above all else, Billy treasured the time spent with his grandchildren and his entire family, who were the center of his world.
Billy graduated from Washington High School in 1955. After graduation, Billy served in the US Army from 1955 -1958 being stationed at Fort Devens in Massachusetts. Billy retired from Lolli Manufacturing in 2000 after 26 yrs of loyal service. After retirement Billy moved back to his hometown of Washington Indiana with his wife of nearly 67 years, Patricia Hughey.
His life was a testament to his nurturing spirit as he and Patricia raised four children: Lyndell Stainbrook, Billy Hughey II, Lisa Hughey, and Brian Hughey. His guidance and love continued to flourish as he became a grandfather to Aimee Denio Abbott (Ryan), Normandy Denio Carroll (Jason), Stacey Russell, Billy Hughey III, Paula Hughey, Brett Hughman, Bradleigh Hughey Pedraza (Jesús), Brandon Hughey (Erin), and Bryanne Hughey. The blessings of family further multiplied with his great-grandchildren: Vanessa Kidwell (Curtis), Patricia Denio, Isabella Denio Miller, Annalisa Denio Miller, Phoebe Denio Abbott, Leilana Le, Alydia Le, Tai Le, Angelina Westerfield (Malachi), Tatyana Ruiz, Dublin Russell, Billy Hughey IV, Abigail Hughey, Isaiah Pedraza, Ryleigh Pedraza, Claire Hughey, Elaina Hughey, Madison Hughey-Davis, Connor Francis Hughey, Noah Warne, and Delilah Hughey, and his great-great-grandchildren who brought Billy immense joy and pride: Nolan Hanson, Joseph Hanson, Adrian Hanson, Raelynn Kidwell, Adalynn Kidwell, Bella Kidwell, Landon Short, Avery Wade, Issac Wade, and Maeve Westerfield.
Billy is fondly remembered and survived by his siblings Carolyn Cox and Bruce Hughey. He brought his gentle nature to every gathering, making each family member and friend feel valued and loved. His life's journey was also shaped by siblings who preceded him in death: Richard Hughey, Betty Mason, LaVerene McDonald, Imogene Miller, James Hughey, Nancy Strockbine, and Barbara Wright as well as his parents. His family faced a profound loss in 1988 when his granddaughter Tabitha Ryan Hughey Knowles passed away, leaving an imprint of cherished memories.
Billy's life was a reflection of the simplest yet most significant virtues: kindness, friendship, and thoughtfulness. These principles echoed through his actions and interactions, leaving a legacy that will endure in the minds and hearts of his loved ones. The fond memories and love he shared will shine on, guiding and comforting his family and friends.

There will be a burial service on June 14, 2024 with procession leaving from Fredrick and Son Gill Funeral Home at 11:00am to New Veale Creek Cemetery.
