George R. Lavely Jr., 80, Vincennes, passed away Sunday, January 7, 2018 at Oak Village Nursing Home. George was born July 31, 1937, in Vincennes, the son of George R. and Anna Emily (Frey) Lavely. He married Rita Biggs on May 28, 1960. He farmed and worked at Meadow Gold Creamery, drove a fuel truck for Johnson Oil Company, and retired from the Grower’s Co-op. He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Harmony Society and the Men’s Club at St. Thomas Catholic Church. He received the Simon Brutè Award from the Catholic Church. George served in the National Guard and the United States Army. Graduated in 1955 from Central Catholic High School, George loved to fish, play cards and always passed out candy to the kids at Church and on his truck route. All who knew dad would give him snapping turtles, as he loved cleaning them and have turtle fries! He was a huge fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, South Knox Spartans and I.U.
George is survived by his wife, Rita Lavely of Vincennes; daughter, Kim (Ron) Kotter of Vincennes; son, Mike (Malinda) Lavely of Vincennes; grandchildren, Briana (Justin) Alford, Jacob Williams and Owen and Kalissa Lavely; step-grandchildren, Erin (Walker) Mullin and Amy Peterson; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two children; and brother, Robert Lavely.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, January 12, 2018 at 10:00 AM at St. Thomas Catholic Church with Rev. Dave Fleck officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 11, 2018 from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Fredrick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Home Vincennes Chapel, 313 Church St. He will be laid to rest at St. Thomas Cemetery.
