Marvin "Gene" Williams

Marvin Gene Williams, 83, of Oaktown, died peacefully at home with loved ones by his side Thursday, June 1.

Gene was born August 21, 1933 in Frichton, Indiana, the son of Benjamin and Effie Williams. As a farmer, he was a man that devoted his life to working the land. He spent countless hours outdoors preparing for spring planting and fall harvest loving every minute. He took care of his family and was always there when they needed him. He served in the Korean War in 1954 as a mechanic. He was a member of Bethel Church and Christian Partners Sunday School Class. He served on the Freelandville Community Home Board, Bethel Church Board as a deacon, and volunteered for the Habitat for Humanity. He was a founding member of building the Freelandville Community Center. He enjoyed collecting tractors and was proud of still owning his very first tractor, a 1953 Case DC. He was an avid fan of IU basketball games, St. Louis Cardinals baseball games, and the grandkids sporting events. He loved helping his kids and grandkids with 4-H projects and attending the Knox County Fair each year. He and his wife enjoyed vacationing in Florida and spending time with their best friends John and Lillian Clinkenbeard.

He is survived by his wife Carolyn Ann (Brocksmith) Williams whom he married June 14, 1952 at Bethel Church; their son Bill Williams and his wife Tammy; daughters Cheryl Lane and her husband Jerry, Susie Singleton and her husband Joe, and Diane Telligman and her husband Mark; his grandchildren Ryan (Shelly) Lane, Clay (Brandy) Williams, Jamie (Jessica) Lane, Keith (Erica) Telligman, Clint (Katie) Williams, Tara (Jess) Brower, Brandy (Michael) Toney, Emily (Casey) Pirtle, and Graham Singleton; great grandchildren Case, Cohen, Lane, Milee, Marlee, Paislee, and Finn Williams; Owen, Mason, and Cora Lane; Jack, Nolan, Bennett, and Jonathan Brower; Levi and Molly Telligman; Miles and Grady Toney; and Sadie and Josie Pirtle; brothers Jerry (Sue Ann) Williams and Sam (Patty) Williams; and sisters Doris Richter and Sharon Jones; and several nieces and nephews.

He was proceeded in death by parents, sister Lois Hyllested, and great grandchildren Jude and Audrey Toney.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2017 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Bethel Church. Funeral services will be Sunday, June 4, 2017 also at Bethel Church at 3:00 PM with Pastor Mike DeCoursey officiating. He will be laid to rest at Bethel Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Fredrick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Home Bicknell Chapel. Memorial contributions can be made to Bethel Church or Freelandville Community Home.
